Quetzalcoatl Flying Over El Puente Puppet Craft

Supplies:

  • Drawing of Zarco Guerrero’s quetzalcoatl, in three sections: head & neck, torso, tail
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch or sharp pencil
  • 2 Brass paper fasteners or pieces of string
  • 2 Popsicle sticks or straws
  • Tape or glue
  • Crayons or markers
Print this out!

Instructions:

  1. Color your quetzalcoatl – feathered serpent! The quetzal bird, a sacred bird in both Aztec and Mayan cultures, is known for its beautiful bright colors of red, green, blue, and more!
  2. Cut out the three sections of your quetzalcoatl.
  3. Poke a hole in the small white circles on each section of the quetzalcoatl body.
  4. Connect the head to the body through the punched out holes with a piece of string or a paper fastener.
  5. Connect the body to the tail through the punched out holes with a piece of string or a paper fastener.
  6. Turn the quartzalcoatl over to see the uncolored side of the paper. Using glue or a piece of tape, attach one popsicle stick to the back of the head, and one to the back of the tail, with sticks hanging down to use as puppet handles. (If using glue, wait for it to dry.)
  7. Done! Pick up your quetzalcoatl puppet by the sticks to make it fly, and dance, raise its head, and swing its tail!

Building the Paper Bowl El Puente

Supplies:

  • Two paper bowls
  • Crayons or markers
  • Tape or glue
  • Scissors
  1. On the first bowl, draw Two Lines on the inside of the bowl, making the center section larger than the sides, and cut along the lines to produce three pieces. Creating a walkway and two supports.

2. On the second bowl, cut down the center into two pieces, and cut the bowl rim edges off. Keep the edges as two arches. Put remainder pieces aside.

3.Decorate the 5 pieces of your bridge: 2 arches, one walkway, two supports.

4. Glue the two support pieces together, from the bottoms of the bowl..

5. Place the walkway over the glued together supports, using glue or tape to help keep in place.

6. Place the two arches on either side of the bridge, gluing or taping them to the support pieces.

7. Now you have a paper bridge is done use your Quetzalcoatl to fly over the bridge!
