Día de los Muertos: The Untold Stories

Youth folklorico dancers in colorful dresses wearing calaca (skeleton) masks created by Zarco Guerrero

Join master sculptor and storyteller Zarco Guerrero as he shares untold stories of the Día de los Muertos holiday as told through his many masked characters on August 24 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The evening will begin with a storytelling performance by Zarco at the K’é Community Lab in Downtown Mesa. Next we’ll take a walk across the street to view a pop-up exhibition of a collection of his performance masks used by youth artists over the last 40 years. This artist talk will provide an up close view of masks that have used by youth performance groups at Cultural Coalition’s MIKIZTLI: Día de los Muertos Festivals.

The masks on display are part of Cultural Coalition, Inc’s Mask Alive Museum Guerrero Family Legacy Project. As co-founders of Cultural Coalition, Inc, Zarco and Carmen Guerrero began this new initiative to provide a space for creative, artistic expression that exhibits a global collection of masks and art in celebration of the human cultural practice of storytelling.

This storytelling performance and artist talk are free and open to the public, made possible through support by Arizona Humanities and K’é Community Lab. Space is limited, RSVP on Eventbrite is required to reserve a seat.
