FREE Portal to The Past Celebration
Learn About Ancient Sonoran People
PHOENIX, Arizona. October 20th – Please join Cultural Coalition, Inc. and the Pueblo Grande Museum in celebrating the installation of a new art piece, the “Portal to the Past”. Situated right next to the main buildings of the Pueblo Grande Museum, the Portal will be one of several entrances to the new City of Phoenix initiative, the Grand Canalscape.
The portal was designed by artist Zarco Guerrero and highlights the accomplishments of the Ancestral Sonoran people who first irrigated the desert by engineering an intricate canal system. This public art project was funded with a grant from the New Arizona Prize Water Public Art Challenge. This was a joint venture between Cultural Coalition and the Pueblo Grande Museum.
This event will feature music, traditional basket dancers as well as local poets and storytellers. Families welcome! There will be a kids’ craft area and cultural arts demonstrations.
2PM – 3PM: Enjoy a performance from the Keli Akimel Basket Dancers
3PM – 4PM: Enjoy storytelling performances by Violent Duncan, Cher Thomas and Anna Flores
Plus!: Meet this year’s Indigenous Royalty from Arizona State University
4PM – 5PM: Enjoy live musical entertainment by Randy Kemp, Zarco Guerrero and others
