Este año, en colaboración con CHISPA Arizona, el Altar Comunitario de la Coalición Cultural en nuestro MIKIZTLI: Día de los Muertos PHX Festival estuvo dedicado a los Defensores de la Tierra de la Madre Tierra. This year in partnership with CHISPA Arizona, Cultural Coalition’s Community Altar at our MIKIZTLI: Día de los Muertos PHX Festival was dedicated to Mother Earth’s Defenders/ Defensores de la Tierra. Learn more about the individuals they honored, who lost their lives defending the earth as environmental activists, protectors of endangered species, and preservers of natural habitats.

- ESP: Honrar a nuestros ambientalistas caídos asesinados en la lucha por un planeta más saludable.
- ENG: Honor our environmental leaders who have been killed in the fight for a healthier planet.
La importancia / It’s importance
ESP: Es importante rendir homenaje a nuestros ambientalistas porque han dado su vida por tener el derecho al agua limpia, al aire y por defender a la Madre Tierra. Es importante para Chispa AZ que nuestros miembros vivan en una comunidad que tenga acceso a aire limpio, acceso a terrenos públicos y agua limpia.
ENG: It is important to pay tribute to our environmentalists because they have given their lives to have the right to clean water, air and to defend Madre Earth. It is important for Chispa AZ that our members live in a community that has access to clean air access to public lands and clean water.
Los defensores / The defenders
- ESP: David Diaz Valdez, murió en septiembre de 2020 defendiendo el medio ambiente a favor de todos los pobladores, sus tierras natales y campos en el estado de Colima. Oscar Eyraud, líder indígena mexicano, luchó por los derechos de agua de los Kumiai en Tecate Baja California. Estelo Casanto Mauricio. Líder ashaninka fue asesinado en 2021 por defender los derechos territoriales de los indígenas.
Es impotante que la gente escuche estas historias para generar conciencia sobre la lucha que están atravesando muchas comunidades indígenas, no solo en los EE. UU. sino en todo el mundo. - ENG: David Diaz Valdez, died in September 2020 defending the environment in favor of all the inhabitants, their native lands, and fields in the state of Colima. Oscar Eyraud, Mexican indigenous leader, fought for the water rights of the Kumiai in Tecate Baja California. Estelo Casanto Mauricio. Ashaninka leader was assassinated in 2021 for defending indigenous land rights.
It is essential for people to hear these stories to bring awareness of the fight that many indigenous communities are going through, not just in the U.S.A but everywhere else around the world.
Colaboración / Collaboration
- ESP: Nos invitaron al evento Mikiztil 2021, pusimos un pequeño altar en honor a nuestros ancestros. Este año estábamos emocionados de preparar el altar junto con la comunidad Latinx. Los miembros de la comunidad compartieron fotos y cartas para honrar a sus familiares durante el altar. Invitamos a los miembros de Chispa AZ que ya conocen la tradición, y al mismo tiempo fue una oportunidad para que participaran los jóvenes y aquellos que necesitan estar conectados con sus raíces. Además, para celebrar esta tradición, comimos unos deliciosos tamales típicos veracruzanos en hoja de plátano, bien preparados por miembros de la comunidad con mucho entusiasmo.
- ENG: We were invited to the 2021 Mikiztil event, we put up a small altar in honor of our ancestors. This year we got excited and prepared the altar alongside the Latinxs community. Community members shared pictures and letters to honor their relatives during the altar. We invited Chispa AZ members who already know the tradition, and at the same time it was an opportunity for young people and those who need to be connected to their roots to participate. Also, to celebrate this tradition, we ate some delicious typical Veracruz tamales in banana leaves, well prepared by members of the community with great enthusiasm.
