The Dia de los Muertos Phx Festival is an interactive, multi-generational, and participatory cultural immersion event blending traditional Mexican experiences with a twist of Southwestern flavor. The festival aims to instill a sense of history, pride and knowledge about our multicultural roots to the community at large through culturally relevant programming and activities.
Presented by Cultural Coalition, the festival takes disappearing folk traditions and reinterprets them, creating new and innovative ways to address important social issues, while encouraging collaborations between local institutions and community artists. Our creative modern adaptations of ancient customs such as La Mascarada, The Flight of Quetzalcoatl, and La Llorona, promote our cultural heritage while preserving our traditions.
The 2nd Annual Dia de Los Muertos Phx Festival took place on Sunday, October 27th from 1 to 6 pm at Margaret T. Hance Park in Downtown Phoenix. Participants were entertained by more than 60 performing artists, many as masked characters. The accompanying Artist Mercado featured some of Arizona’s best local artists. There were also food booths, arts activities and of course, the traditional Candlelight Procesión at the end of the day! It was a wonderful event and we hope you’ll join us for next year’s festival!
